C. 1098 - 1179 Hildegard was a German Benedictine abbess, polymath, writer, composer, philosopher, mystic, visionary, and medical practitioner. Elected as magistra at Disibodenberg in 1136, she later founded the monasteries of Rupertsberg and Eibingen. She is one of the best-known composers of sacred monophony, with more surviving chants than any other medieval compose. Considered by many scholars to be the founder of scientific natural history in Germany, she authored extensive theological, botanical, and medicinal works, along with poems, letters, and liturgical hymns.
